McLaren has unveiled a new Can-Am special edition based on its 650S roadster.
Created by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) - the British carmaker’s customisation division - the new special edition is supposed to capture the spirit of one of the fastest, most exciting race series of all time.
Just 50 will be made, all coming painted in three Can-Am inspired paint jobs.
The 650S (pictured) comes with a distinctive red and black paintwork to pay tribute to the legendary McLaren M1B that campaigned in the 1966 Can-Am season. That’s why it’s painted in Mars Red with a black bonnet and roll hoops. Inside, there’s black Nappa leather seats with grey Alcantara centres.
The other two colour options are ‘Papaya Spark’ orange and Onyx black.
All three colours combo roadsters come with special black alloys and black (unpainted) carbon-fibre bonnet, retractable hardtop and airbrake.
Inside, the Can-Am edition adds heated seats, extra carbon-fibre trim and sill plus a dedication plaque.
Sadly, the MSO department stopped short in giving the 650S Can-Am race car levels of power.
Instead, you have to make do with the regular car’s 478kW that’s generated from a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8. Luckily, that’s still enough to hurtle the 650S droptop from standstill to 100km/h in 3.0 seconds flat.
It’s not known how many, if any, of the Can-Am special edition 650S Spiders will make it Down Under.
