
Mercedes-AMG has released a short film to explain how its new AMG GT R's aerodynamics differ from the regular GT.
Presented by the GT R's chief engineer for aerodynamics, Gustavo Estrada, the video explains how an active front chin spoiler deploys at speeds above 80km/h to create an under-body venturi effect that reduces front axle lift by more than 50 per cent compared to the standard AMG GT at its maximum 318km/h top speed.
New active vents under the large front grille also are capable of closing at speed to reduce drag and direct air to the venturi.
As well as the active chin spitter, the double curtain spoiler (placed at the corners of the front bumper) also feed cool air to the front brake system and help ventilate the wheel-arches.
At the rear of the GT R, there’s an adjustable rear spoiler and double diffusor that boosts downforce and reduces lift.
Powered by AMG's twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, the GT R pumps 430kW and 700Nm through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, the rear-drive AMG ripping to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds.
Set to go head-to-head with the 911 GT3 RS, AMG already claims that the GT R will "absolutely" beat the hard-core track-suited Porsche.
When it arrives in Australia next July (2017), the AMG GT R is expected to cost around $350,000.
Mercedes-AMG has already confirmed that once the GT R is launched, even faster Black Series and GT4 versions of the GT will follow.
