Porsche has released a new video to show off its new hardcore track-only coupe just hours after it was unveiled at the LA motor show.
The Cayman GT4 Clubsport, alas, has already been ruled out for us Down Under, although Porsche Australia has not ruled out the possibility of a forthcoming street-legal RS that’s set to borrow many of the Clubsport’s hardware.
For now, we’ll have to make do with the new vid, that’s set inside a car park instead of its natural home, the race circuit.
Powered by the same mid-mounted 283kW/420Nm 3.8-litre flat-six as the standard Cayman GT4, the Clubsport adds a host of race-ready components, making it the most focussed Cayman ever.
Biggest change is instead of using the GT4's six-speed manual transmission, the racer gets a modified six-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission with shift paddles and a mechanical rear differential lock designed specifically for racing.
Upfront, a lighter new strut axle is taken from the 911 GT3 Cup, while at the rear there’s an even lighter rear strut suspension with transverse arms.
As in the standard GT4, there are 911 GT3-sourced 380mm brake discs all round with six-piston callipers up front, but the anti-lock system features 12 settings and the stability control system is recalibrated for Michelin racing slicks on 18-inch five-bolt forged wheels.
Weighing just 1300kg, the stripped-out Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a turn-key race car, delivered from the factory with an FIA-spec welded-in safety cage and a racing bucket seat with six-point harness.
The weigh-saving should see it his 100km/h in less than four seconds (the standard GT4 does it in a claimed 4.4).
The North American version comes with a 70-litre fuel tank as standard, with the option of 100 litre tank, plus a central fire extinguisher system.
As in Europe, the Clubsport racecar is available directly from Porsche Motorsport in North America, where the price is $US165,000 ($A230,000). The standard Cayman GT4 costs $189,900 here.
