Dodge Viper fans are rallying together to ensure the American-made supercar gets an appropriate send off, with one last attempt at setting a production car lap record at Germany's Nurburgring.
The last factory-backed attempt was all the way back in September 2011 when the previous-gen Viper ACR set a stunning lap of 7:12.13 - a record that stood for two years until Porsche's 918 usurped it with an even quicker 6:57 lap time.
Fans demanded Dodge should take revenge, but their calls to set a new time fell on deaf ears, so its latest Viper ACR Extreme failed to record an official time.
Instead the Dodge set 13 lap records at circuits around the US, including an outright production car record at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California, where the Viper beat the 918 by more than a second.
Now, before production officially ends, fans are rushing to raise money themselves to prove the Viper ACR Extreme's 480kW/813Nm 8.4-litre alloy V10 is more than a match for the state-of-the-art million-dollar hybrid hypercar.
Raising more than US$56,000 (A$74,000) in a matter of days, the crowdfunding campaign’s target is to raise $159,000 ($210,000) for the record attempt to take place.
Supporting the unofficial record is Texas-based dealer, the Viper Exchange, which has confirmed it will supply two ACR Extremes for the attempt.
The money raised will also pay for two professional drivers, a team of mechanics to support the record attempt and the complete hire of the circuit for the fast lap.
