What's almost six metres long, has gullwing doors, more luxury than the Sultan of Brunei's private residence and four seats? Benz' latest ultra-luxury concept, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupe, that's what!
Mercedes-Benz has released official details exposing the 2+2 coupe and its reason for being, following the leaking of official images of the vehicle the previous day. The show car is making its public debut at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance vintage car event in California this weekend.
Featuring a combination of new and old, both in the design and materials used in its construction, the vehicle is an "homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés and consciously carries this tradition forward into the future," according to Mercedes-Benz.
In other words, Mercedes-Maybach will be canvassing collectors' thoughts on such a vehicle, which takes extravagance to the next level with wrap-around infinity seats that create an endless loop of luxury around the occupants.
The addition of advanced gesture controls, elm wood inlays, augmented reality projections, Chesterfield-inspired seats and 24-inch alloy wheels with clear shields show a juxtaposition between classic and high-tech.
Because a conventional engine under the bonnet has been replaced by four small electric motors, there's a huge front luggage area that comes with custom matching suitcases – naturally.
The concept car also demonstrates advanced head-up display or augmented reality technology, which covers much of the inside of the windscreen with computer graphics to display advanced navigation, safety aids and other alerts right in front of the driver's eyes – without obscuring the view of the road.
Controls are minimal (read: banished), and in a novel twist the car can even monitor driver health and stress levels.
The seats contain several "body sensor displays" that scan occupants to monitor heart rate, body temperate and other functions, and will automatically adjust to ensure supreme comfort levels.
The car will then adjust the seat and cabin temperature and even activate a massage function if it detects the need. It will also adjust ambient lighting to improve the mood.
These functions may sound far-fetched but it's understood Mercedes-Benz is seriously considering advanced body monitoring systems for production cars.
Power for the imposing 5700mm long concept, with a "boat tail" rear design inspired by classic luxury yachts, comes from a quartet of electric motors that can propel the AWD machine to 100km/h in under 4.0 seconds!
Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, the big, brash electric vehicle (EV) generating a total of 550kW of power from its quad motors.
Cruising range is more than 500km between charges, and the underfloor battery pack has a capacity of around 80kWh says Mercedes-Maybach. Best of all, the Vision 6 Coupe can be fast-charged to add an extra 100km of range in just five minutes, Benz reckons, thanks to a special DC charging setup that could revolutionise the EV world if production proves to be feasible.
The German luxury car maker envisions several charging possibilities too, not just via a plug-in cable. Indeed, Mercedes-Maybach says the audacious concept car "can be charged wirelessly, via an electromagnetic field".
Big, fast, and silent, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupe is packed with EV technology that is expected to be premiere at the 2016 Paris motor show in October under the skin of a zero emission Mercedes concept that will preview the company's first production EV.
"Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool," said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG, Mercedes-Maybach's parent company.
"With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency."
The likelihood of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupe becoming a production car is slim, based on the previous 'Vision' concepts released by the company, such as the Vision EnerG-Force (Los Angeles, November 2012), AMG Vision Gran Turismo (Sunnyvale, 2013) and Vision Tokyo (Tokyo, 2015).
Mercedes 'Vision' vehicles are primarily flights of fantasy for the brand, created to generate hype, and hint at design cues that will inform the brand's design language for decades to come, rather than years.
All that said, some of its luxurious features are almost certain to be seen in Mercedes-Maybach's next new model, based on the S-Class Coupe.
