Viva Italia

Italian car makers will be celebrated in the Albury region during the 2013 Italian Connection Trophy Car Rally

The musical crackle of Ferraris, Maseratis, Alfa Romeos and Fiats will resonate around the Albury region of NSW from May 17 to May 19 as enthusiasts from around the country gather to participate in the annual Italian Connection Trophy Car Rally.

Up for grabs is the Italian Connection Trophy, which will go to the driver/navigator team that makes the fewest mistakes over three individual days of competitive driving.

Organisers stress that the rally is not a high speed event; rather it is a test of navigation and driving skills.

Each day drivers will be given a set of instructions guiding them over a circuit via a number of destination checkpoints. Along the way, they will be required to identify and record specific features.

On top of that, this year the organisers have secured Corryong airport for “Top Gear style” tests, while three motorkhanas – at the Corryong airport, in Falls Creek and at a new test track at Barnawartha – will test driver judgment and handling skills.

Stressing that the event is designed to cover a wide spectrum of drivers, the organisers point out that last year’s winners – Dana Dupere and Todd Gilmour driving their Maserati 4200 Spyder – were first-timers in the event.

The rally, which runs on sealed roads all the way, covers much of the picturesque country of southern NSW and north eastern Victoria.

The event has already attracted a number of classic cars, predominantly Italian but this year including a number of other famous European guest marques including Team Tazio’s 1953 Porsche 550 Spyder.

A show and shine display on Sunday May 19 will feature a range of classic cars.

The Italian Connection Trophy rally will raise funds for the Duchenne Foundation for medical research, and to improve the treatment, quality of daily life and long-term outlook for boys (it only affects boys) afflicted with Duchennes, the deadliest form of muscular dystrophy.

The organisers advise that some places are still available and those wishing to participate should contact Robert Gunn on: (02) 9960 1733 / 0438 848 048 (Email robert@italianconnection.com.au) or go to the Website: www.italianconnection.com.au
