Volkswagen Australia has given the nod to a new flagship in the Amarok range, one it says will boast a healthy off-road bent.
The Amarok Canyon is expected to reach local showrooms later this year, Volkswagen Australia product marketing manager, Nick Reid, confirmed to journalists this week.
Just like the four-cylinder Canyon first offered in 2014, the six-pot version will be positioned over and above the existing Highline and Ultimate V6 models, and will land around October.
The Canyon heads a list of revisions to both the four-cylinder and six-cylinder diesel Amarok line-ups for 2017.

“This model carries on the Amarok Canyon brand, which we first introduced in 2015,” Reid said.
“It’s a very important model for Australia and adds a good balance of premium features and also off-roading ability.”
Manual versions of the Canyon will be offered with a low-range transfer case – a first for the V6 Amarok.
Volkswagen sys there will be other off-road features designed to distinguish the new model from its siblings.
Reid also revealed the regular V6 versions of the Amarok had exceeded expectations since going on sale.
“The sales have been outstanding so far. The demand is very strong for this model,” he said.

“In January we sold over 600 Amaroks, up 9.5 per cent on 2016 and 5.9 per cent market share in a market that was down four per cent.
“The pipeline is very strong for us, we have a very strong order bank, especially on the Ultimate model. There’s a wait on the car, pending on the car and where you are in Australia.
“It’s a very strong result for us.”
Meantime, stakeholders confirmed the updated four-cylinder Amarok range is now on sale.
All four-cylinder Amarok models share the same face and exterior styling features of the V6 model 2017, including a new closed-type underbody guard on 4x4 models that is said to increase ground clearance by 34mm.
Inside, the update incorporates an updated infotainment system incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A reversing camera and rear parking sensors (not available on cab chassis models) will become standard on all 4x4 models, and optional on 4x2 models.
New trim names also coincide with the changes. The Core Plus 4x4 model now replaces the Highline specification, and adds carpet floor covering, an upgraded cloth seat trim, front parking sensors, additional 12-volt sockets, body coloured mirrors and door handles, rear grab handles and interior lights and the post-collision braking system.
As such, the Core Plus 4x4 rises $1500 in price, but is said to offer a $3000 in added value.
