Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design boss Albert Kirzinger has posted pictures of the rugged Volkswagen Amarok-based off-road SUV that was under consideration but ultimately never green-lit for production.
Posting images of a design rendering on his personal LinkedIn profile, Kirzinger captioned the picture of the sister SUV to the Ford Everest with: “Exploring design ideas for the Amarok pickup truck!
“Our research phase back in the day took us on an off-road journey, and here’s a sneak peek with a rendering featuring a fully closed pickup bed. Ready for rugged adventures!”

Volkswagen has never admitted to actively developing a Ford Everest spin-off, but back in 2022 carsales reported that both the Ford Everest and the Ford Ranger Raptor were off limits to VW in the Blue Oval’s joint-venture with the German auto giant.
Back then, senior Ford execs said Volkswagen would not be given the option of producing an Everest-based SUV or a Raptor-based high-performance ute because they were seen as crown jewels.
It now looks like Volkswagen went ahead anyway and allowed internal design proposals to be submitted.
As well as clashing with the Everest, it’s understood there were also fears internally that a Volkswagen Amarok-based SUV might also steal sales away from the Bronco in the US.

There’s no word on how old the sketches are but it’s thought Volkswagen might now go ahead and introduce its own off-road SUV under its all-new Scout brand.
In that case, the SUV in question will come with a battery-electric powertrain rather than a combustion petrol or diesel engine.
To be produced in a new factory located near Columbia in South Carolina in the US, the incoming Scout SUV (and pick-up) will be developed in partnership with Magna Steyr – the Austrian off-road engineering specialist that most recently helped develop the INEOS Grenadier and has produced the Mercedes-Benz G-Class since its birth back in 1979.
