Stretched Volkswagen Amarok XL and XXL now available

Volkswagen can now convert your Amarok dual-cab 4x4 ute into a longer machine, with a full factory warranty

Volkswagen Group Australia has announced full pricing and specifications for the pair of locally-stretched versions of VW Amarok utes announced last November.

Longer than some full-size American pick-up trucks, the new Volkswagen Amarok XL and XXL models improve the ute’s tray size and cargo-carrying capacity.

Available now from Volkswagen dealers, the stretched Amarok models add between $11,000 and $22,000 on top of the price of the ute.

This conversion increases the hay hauler’s length from around 5.2 metres to 5.56 metres for the XL and a whopping 5.9 metres for the Volkswagen Amarok XXL.

That means that if you want a new Volkswagen Amarok with the long tray, the lowest you’ll pay is a smidge under $50,000 for the Amarok cab chassis ($38,490) with the XL conversion. You’ll be looking at around $95,000 for the XXL mods fitted to the range-topping V6-powered TDI 580 Ultimate model ($72,790).

With a range of options and accessories also available, prices for top-spec Amarok XXL utes will easily exceed $100,000.

Cargo-box, flat-bed or cab/chassis formats are offered.

The Volkswagen Amarok XXL ute conversion adds between $11,000 and $22,000 to the base price

While the most expensive Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara utes target off-road enthusiasts with the Raptor and Warrior hero vehicles, Volkswagen is looking to entice tradies, camper van companies, emergency services and even the military into its locally-converted super-long ute.

The conversion increases the wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles) by 310mm for the XL and 650mm for the XXL, which therefore increases its tray size significantly.

While the standard Volkswagen Amarok can fit a European pallet between the wheel-arches with its 1222mm width and has a tray length of 1555mm, the latter increases to 1865mm in the XL and 2205mm in the Amarok XXL.

Axle loadings increase between 25kg and 85kg depending on the conversion and vehicle type, while towing capacity is unchanged at 3500kg -- as is gross vehicle mass (GVM). See the data table below for details.

The stretched Amarok ute conversion is not inexpensive but has been engineered by Dutch company Veth Automotive as part of Volkswagen Australia’s factory-endorsed Body Builder Program.

Designed and assembled in Australia by Adelaide company Adaptive Automotive, the dual-cab ute mods retain Volkswagen’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Where's the 6x6 XXXL version?

The stretched ute bed conversions are available on the current-model (GP) Volkswagen Amarok dual-cab 4x4 (4Motion) vehicles, both four-cylinder and V6 versions, manual and automatic.

Other changes to the Volkswagen Amarok XL and XXL dual-cab utes include reworked electronic stability control (ESC) software, which is “designed to compensate for the longer wheelbase,” says VW Australia. These changes “ensure vehicle safety and operation, even in off-road conditions,” adds the German importer.

The VW Amarok XL and XXL utes don’t really have any direct rivals, with the LDV T60 Mega Tub and SsangYong Musso XLV dual-cab utes offering longer-than-usual tray sizes but nothing like the European-designed conversion for the Volkswagen Amarok.

The SsangYong Musso XLV (from $33,990) is a 5.4-metre-long ute, up from 5.1 metres on the regular models, while the LDV T60 Mega Tub ($36,990) measures almost 5.7 metres long -- up from 5.36 metres.

"The Amarok XL and XXL top-to-tail solutions are very much the tip of the iceberg. Volkswagen and its partners can engineer literally dozens of bespoke variants," explained Andrew Hester, the national conversion manager overseeing the project.

The new models are available to order across Volkswagen's Australian dealer network.
