Standards Australia has announced four design winners in the Automotive & Transport category of its 2008 Australian International Design Awards.
Volkswagen scored twice, with the five-piece folding roof the Eos convertible and the TSI 'twin-charged' direct-injection petrol engine.
Honda took home a gong for the Civic Type R and truck trailer builder Freighter won for that company's EziLiner semi-automatic side curtain system.
The roof of the Eos, the so-called CSC roof ('Coupe, Sliding & Convertible') uses an electro-hydraulic system to open and close within 25 seconds and, as the name suggests, features an integrated sliding/tilting glass roof.
Fitted to the Golf GT, the TSI engine employs a supercharger to pump more air at lower speeds for lean-burn combustion and the turbocharger spools up at higher revs, ensuring optimum power is produced for relatively little fuel use from the small-capacity engine.
Honda's British-built Civic Type R was promoted by the manufacturer for its distinctive style and some of the functional features encompassed within the styling package, such as the underbody cover which reduces aerodynamic drag beneath the car, and NVH countermeasures like the careful exterior mirror design and flat-blade windscreen wipers.
Other entries for the Automotive & Transport category included Holden's VE Ute, the Nissan Dualis, Renault Scenic/Grand Scenic, Saab 9-3 BioPower, Skoda Roomster, Hyundai i30, Audi A5/S5, Audi R8 and Volvo C30.
