Volkswagen lands sub-$50K Amarok V6 manual

New entry-level manual model to anchor German brand's dual-cab V6 utility range

Volkswagen Australia has confirmed specification details for its first Amarok V6 dual-cab ute fitted with a manual transmission.

Due to reach Australian showrooms from December, the Volkswagen Amarok Core V6 manual is set to be priced at about $47,000 plus on-road costs.

As carsales previously reported, it will be fitted with a six-speed manual, low-range four-wheel drive gearing and a differential lock as standard, along with a load space capable of carrying a full-size Australian pallet.

The manual’s outputs match the current V6 Amarok fitted with an eight-speed automatic: 165kW of power (180kW on overboost) and 550Nm. Braked towing capacity is rated at 3000kg -- down from 3.5 tonnes for the automatic.

Being a Core model, the manual will be equipped standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth seat trim, vinyl flooring, a reversing camera and four-wheel disc brakes.

A 6.4-inch centre touch-screen will handle infotainment duties and include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, matched by a separate digital screen in the otherwise-analogue instrument cluster.

With V6 variants of the Amarok now making up 80 per cent of Australian sales, there’s little surprise the new 4x4 V6 Core manual will be joined by another two higher-spec twin-cab V6 variants, a new Highline Black model and already-reported Canyon variant.

The Highline Black adds 20-inch black alloy wheels, gloss-black finishes for the rear bumper and roll bar, and blacked-out badging.

The same dark theme manifests in the interior, with cloth seats finished in ‘palladium’ grey and black headlining and pillar trims. Leather seat trim is an optional extra.

Power in the Highline Black is sourced from an uprated 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 good for 190kW (200kW on overboost) and 580Nm. Pricing starts at $64,990 (plus on-road costs).

Limited to 350 units, the Amarok TDI550 Canyon is fitted with extras and priced at $57,990 plus on-road costs — $5400 more than the TDI550 Core ($52,590 plus ORCs). You can read more about that model here.

With the Volkswagen Amarok V6 Core automatic currently advertised at $49,990 drive-away, there’s every chance the manual version will undercut that by at least $2000.

Stay tuned for more details closer to the manual’s December launch.
