Volkswagen of America used last week’s Chicago Auto Show to reveal its first Rallycross-Beetle, complete with all-wheel-drive and a 412kW-plus direct-injection turbo-petrol engine.
The third-generation Beetle forms the basis of a renewed assault on North America’s fastest growing motorsport, with the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship attracting live TV and big crowds at venues across the US.
Two new ‘super-bugs’ will be driven by 2011 and 2012 champion Tanner Foust and former F1 and NASCAR driver Scott Speed for the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team.
Andretti Autosport will start this year’s GRC season with modified Polo rally cars, built on the same chassis that won the 2013 World Rally Championship.
It will then switch to the GRC Beetle, which will make its world action debut at the Austin, Texas round of the 2014 X Games on June 5.
