Volkswagen Caddy adds petrol power

The Volkswagen Caddy range has been expanded in Australia as a new petrol-powered TSI220 model grade quietly comes on stream.

Due to take effect from January 1, the 2022 Volkswagen Caddy is also now at least $2000 more expensive for the carryover diesel models in what is now a 16-variant range overall that spans trade van, people-mover and California camper configurations.

Until the end of this year, the Caddy range will persist with the same pricing that the fifth-generation series launched with four months ago.

The introduction of the TSI220 sees the Caddy’s entry-level price remain steady at $34,990 plus on-road costs – in this case, for the six-speed manual, short-wheelbase Cargo model.

The TSI220 denotes a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that produces 84kW/220Nm and is paired to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

Oil-burning Caddy variants continue with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel in either TDI280 (75kW/280Nm) or TDI330 (90kW/320Nm) states of tune. The TDI280 pairs with a six-speed manual, while the TDI330 combines with a seven-speed DCT auto.

Under the new pricing structure, the entry diesel-powered Caddy TDI280 SWB Cargo van increases by $2000 to $36,990 plus ORCs, while the range-topping Caddy California TDI320 suffers the biggest spike at $57,690 plus ORCs – up $2700.

Volkswagen has attributed the diesel price hikes to cost pressures including inflation and increased supplier and freight costs.

The increases are also partially offset by petrol-powered versions ensuring identical starting prices for each model in the range.

Standard equipment in the TSI220 mirrors that of the diesel versions, including an electric parking brake, automatic halogen headlights, air-conditioning, reversing camera, front/rear parking sensors, cruise control, central locking, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, LED lights in the cabin and cargo areas, two USB ports and 12-volt outlets front and rear.

Base-grade models employ an 8.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the instrument cluster includes analogue gauges separated by a multifunction display.

Volkswagen says the petrol-powered Caddy is now available to order, with first deliveries slated early next year.
