The seemingly endless 'will they/won't they' debate over Volkswagen Australia's decision to bring the Scirocco coupe down under looks set to drag on. At the same time the company confirmed the Golf R would arrive in local showrooms next year, there is no such definition over the Scirocco's future.
As the R Line versions of both cars go on sale in Europe, Volkswagen Australia spokesman Karl Gehling has told the Carsales Network that no decision on the coupe has been taken yet.
"We'd love to have it," Gehling said. "But we're still looking to where it would fit in the range."
The major stumbling block for the Scirocco remains positioning and price relative to the Golf. Both current VW Oz boss Anke Koeckler and her predecessor Jutta Dierks have admitted that price remains the biggest barrier.
In Europe the two cars are closely matched on price with the Scirocco usually demanding a premium. However, adding further confusion to the pricing issue is that in Australia's closest market that sells both cars, New Zealand, prices the Golf above the equivalent Scirocco.
Gehling confirmed that the Golf R would arrive sometime in 2010, but didn't give any specific details on timing or pricing.
Given the length of the debate over the Scirocco's Australian hopes it appears the confirmation of Golf R could be the final nail in the coffin.
