Volkswagen has confirmed it will reveal an even more extreme version of its Golf GTI Clubsport at the annual Worthersee enthusiast meet next week in Austria.
Called the Clubsport S, the new faster GTI has been created especially for track day enthusiasts, that’s why under the bonnet there will be an uprated version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with at least 227kW.
The more extreme Clubsport S is also set to ditch its rear seats to save weight and get a bespoke suspension tune with stiffer springs and more track-focused dampers.
It’s not known if what must be the fastest-ever Golf GTI will come with the option of the six-speed manual or if all models will come with the six-speed dual-clutch automatic.
According to a Volkswagen insider, production is set to be limited to around 5000 cars and the front-wheel drive Golf GTI Clubsport S is set to be priced above the all-wheel drive Golf R that currently sells for $55,240 (plus on-road costs).
It’s not certain the Clubsport S will make it Down Under because mules testing, thought to be the faster S, have all been three-door models - a variant of the Golf not offered in this market.
If it does come here, since HSV owns the rights to the ‘Clubsport’ nameplate, the hardcore Golf is likely to be renamed the Golf GTI 40 Years S.
More information is expected next week.
