The Volkswagen Eos has been discontinued in Australia, the last model sold back in August 2014, and now it appears the drop-top could be axed completely as sales of the metal-roofed convertible continue to dwindle on a global scale.
The more affordable Golf Cabriolet, with its cloth folding roof is performing much better in most major markets and these two factors along with a third – Volkswagen's desire to consolidate its global range – appear to be the harbingers of the Eos's demise.
It appears as though the Grim Reaper is shuffling ever closer to the Eos, after UK magazine Autocar quoted Volkswagen's technical chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser – a man abreast of all models and technologies in development – virtually confirming that no replacement for the Eos will be forthcoming.
The Eos "may be the first model we take out of the market," said Dr Neusser, when responding to questions about simplifying the Volkswagen portfolio.
The Golf-based Volkswagen Eos was first built in 2006 after being previewed by the Concept C at the 2004 Geneva motor show in Switzerland, and appears as though it may have fulfilled its usefulness for the brand.
The Volkswagen Eos was last updated in Australia in 2011 and in 2014 sold 239 units, compared to the Golf Carbiolet which had 367 sales.
