Hottest ever Golf GTI coming to Australia with three pedals – but only 100 of themPetrol-heads rejoice! Volkswagen Group Australia has secured 500 examples of the most potent Golf ever available here -- the Golf GTI 40 Years edition – and a fifth of them will be fitted with a manual gearbox.
As we revealed last month, VGA was hopeful of offering both manual and DSG automatic versions of the gnarly GTI and now it has confirmed 400 DSG and 100 manual vehicles will be available from July.
Priced at $46,990 plus on-road costs for the six-speed manual and $48,990 plus ORCs for the six-speed DSG, the car gets an Australia-specific '40 Years' name because the international GTI 'Clubsport' name is owned by HSV in this country.
A panoramic electric glass sunroof will be the only optional available here, for $1850.
Powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine cranking out 195kW and 380Nm, the 40th anniversary Golf GTI features a 10-second overboost function that hikes peak power to 213kW.
That means it has bragging rights over the more expensive all-wheel drive Golf R hot hatch, which is priced from $52,740 in Australia, where our 'hot' climate status sees it detuned from Europe's 221kW to just 206kW.
The Golf GTI 40 Years edition also comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, the option of a contrasting black roof with two-piece spoiler, new front and rear bumpers claimed to develop more downforce, fatter side skirts, larger exhaust outlets and darker LED brake lights, plus plenty of fruit for the cabin.
Red stitching on the floor mats, seat belts and Alcantara-clad steering wheel is standard, as are scuff plates with GTI logos and honeycomb seat upholstery. There's added safety tech too, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
Only the five-door versions of the GTI 40 Years will be offered in Australia, and not the three-door as pictured here.
The order book is now open for Australia's hottest ever Golf GTI, first deliveries of which arrive here in late July, but you'd better get in quick because demand will undoubtedly be strong for the limited-edition high-performance hatch.
