Volkswagen Golf R 333 teased

Very yellow limited-edition hot hatch primed and ready for reveal on May 31

Volkswagen is gearing up to debut yet another limited-edition VW Golf R, this one finished in a fetching yellow and black colourway and almost certainly sporting the same 245kW engine as the Golf R 20 Years special.

Teased overnight via a 28-second YouTube video, the new model is shown to be fitted with an Akrapovic exhaust system, black alloy wheels, cross-drilled brake rotors, blue callipers, black mirror caps and unique black ‘333’ side decals, on top of the very yellow metallic paint.

That’s about the extent of our knowledge base for the time being, but VW has locked in a May 31 reveal for its latest Golf R special.

“May we serve you a little foretaste of what we have in store for you next? This is a small sneak peek of our new limited edition Golf R 333,” the video caption reads.

“Are you excited, yet? Mark the 31st of May 2023 in your calendars for the full reveal. Stay tuned!”

Exactly how limited this particular edition will be is anyone’s guess, but the obvious likelihood is that 333 examples will be earmarked for production, though those who know their power metrics will also probably realise 333ps – the preferred metric in Europe – equates neatly to 245kW, the same peak output as the R 20 Years.

The extra kiloWatts should also be backed up by an extra 20Nm, which play a key role in lowering the 20 Years’ 0-100km/h acceleration time from 4.7 to 4.6 seconds.

Both theories are as plausible as each other, but we’ll obviously have to wait until the end of the month to see exactly what the go is.

If the Golf R 333 does end up sharing its mechanical make-up with the 20 Years, there’s a very good chance it will also feature the same elevated speed-limiter and ‘Special’ drive mode tailored to the fearsome Nürburgring.

Volkswagen Australia is yet to voice its interest in what will probably be the most exclusive Mk8 Golf R variant to date, but given this market’s immense appetite for performance vehicles and more specifically R products, we’d wager at least a handful of 333s will make it into local showrooms.
