The Volkswagen Golf R is set for a bumper year of sales with a long production drought finally coming to an end.
Volkswagen Australia stopped taking Golf R orders in early 2023 as component shortages led to supply problems and a waitlist blowing out to 12 months.
Subsequently, sales of the German brand’s hottest hatch were just 151 in 2022 and 346 in 2023, but Volkswagen Australia’s general manager of marketing and product for passenger vehicles, Ralph Beckmann, says the brand expects to shift 1100 examples in 2024.
This is good news for any customers with an existing order as all of them should be fulfilled in the very near future.
Pricing has risen markedly in the interim, with the Mk8 Golf R launching at $65,990 plus on-road costs – itself a $10,000 increase over the Mk7.5 model – but now listing at $70,590 plus ORCs.
Nevertheless, the news is set to further bolster booming local Volkswagen R vehicle sales, with 2900 T-Roc R deliveries making Australia the number one market for the hot small SUV, along with a further 3400 Tiguan Rs.
While the range-topping Tiguan will disappear in 2024 ahead of the arrival of the new-generation model, Volkswagen Australia’s R range this week welcomed the new 340kW/700Nm Touareg R – VW’s most powerful ever production model – which has already attracted about 2000 expressions of interest Down Under.
The updated Mk8.5 Golf R is expected to land in Australia in the second half of 2025, but pricing and specification have yet to be confirmed.
