Volkswagen Group Australia has announced a nation-wide recall today, set to affect more than 60,000 Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda vehicles.
According to Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA), the recall is in relation to faulty “pressure accumulator housing” used inside the DSG twin-clutch gearbox of Volkswagens, Audis and Skodas built between 2009-15.
VGA says the component in question has been found to have been manufactured incorrectly and could result in a loss of oil and pressure in the hydraulic system of the gearbox, followed by an interruption of power.
The vehicle would then go into ‘limp’ mode and not re-start after the ignition is switched off, unless attended to by a qualified VW technician.
Known models affected by the latest recall include certain variants of Volkswagen’s Golf, Polo, Jetta, Beetle, Passat and Caddy; Skoda’s Fabia, Rapid, Octavia, Yeti and Superb manufactured between 2009 and 2015; while certain Audi models including the A1, A3 and TT could also be affected.
And, while Volkswagen ensures this latest recall is not related to a similar gearbox recall in 2013, the German manufacturer says it is possible that some vehicles involved then might also be affected now.
VGA Director of Customer Experience and Marketing, Jason Bradshaw, said replacement of the faulty component could have been carried out in a service campaign, but the car-maker decided an official recall better served the interests of customer and media communication.
Bradshaw also said vehicles need to be physically examined to determine whether they contain the faulty part.
“While we know 23,000 vehicles may have this incorrectly manufactured component, we cannot be certain of identifying these by Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) alone,” he said.
“We want to physically examine them and those [additional vehicles] with a potentially faulty component can have it replaced,” he stated.
A spokesman for VGA told carsales the ACCC has been notified and the recall is officially underway.
VGA says it will contact known customers directly to have their vehicle/s inspected.
