More than 10,000 people have pre-ordered the Volkswagen ID.3 in just 24 hours ahead of the all-electric mid-size hatchback’s release next year.
The sub-€30,000 ($A48,000) EV will be the first car to ride on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Matrix (MEB) skateboard chassis architecture when the production version is unveiled during the Frankfurt motor show in September.
The ID.3 name refers to both the third step-change in Volkswagen’s history (the other two are the Beetle and the Golf) and also leaves room for two smaller, cheaper EVs beneath it.
It’s not the only new German EV to open for pre-orders, though, with Mercedes-Benz taking names for its EQC across Europe and the US already, with deliveries beginning in the northern hemisphere in the third quarter of the year.
Sadly for Australian customers, the northern hemisphere is likely to soak up the German EV demand in its early production, with the ID.3 not expected here until 2022 at the earliest.
