Volkswagen ID.7 teased again ahead of April 17 reveal

More details of German giant’s rival for the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan revealed a fortnight before its global debut

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 will make its world debut at the Shanghai motor show on April 17, VW has announced.

Along with confirming that development is almost complete for its all-new flagship EV, Volkswagen released a new set of teaser images for its answer to the Hyundai IONIQ 6 and Tesla Model 3, which goes on sale in Europe, China and North America late this year.

At this stage there are no plans to release the all-new mid-size electric sedan in Australia, where Volkswagen has promised to launch five new EVs by 2025, including the ID.3 hatch, ID.4 and ID.5 medium SUVs and the ID. Buzz van and people-mover.

But that doesn’t necessarily rule the ID.7 out from making the trip Down Under at a later stage, especially given the local success of the Model 3 – Australia’s top-selling EV – and pent-up demand for the IONIQ 6.

Underpinned by the latest version of Volkswagen’s modular MEB EV platform and featuring the most powerful electric drive motor(s) used in a VW ID product so far, the Passat-sized ID.7 was previewed by the sleek ID.Aero concept last year.

For now, Volkswagen is making some big promises with the ID.7 without actually revealing much ahead of its official reveal within the next fortnight.

But we know its EV drivetrain will deliver a WLTP driving range of up to 700km in its most efficient configuration and it has a targeted DC fast-charging capability of up to 200kW.

We also know that adaptive dampers will be optional and that all versions will sport a vast 15-inch infotainment interface as standard, along with haptic climate control and steering wheel buttons, a head-up display and digital instrument cluster.

New-generation seats with up to 14-way power-adjustment will greet front occupants as they enter the cabin, with flagship versions also scoring massage functions and adaptive seat climate control.

“With the ID.7 we have exploited the potential of the MEB even further. We have also used a new, more powerful and more efficient electric drive motor,” said Volkswagen board member for development Kai Grünitz.

“In addition, we have enhanced the control quality of the running gear and were thus able to further increase driving comfort.

“The combination of a superior drive system, comfortable running gear and long range make the ID.7 the perfect limousine for long distance travel.”
