Volkswagen has announced a lower $25,540 (plus on-road costs) starting price for its new Mk7 Golf Wagon, which goes on sale in Australian debut this week, making it $1450 cheaper than before (from $26,990).
The latest Golf wagon range, which was launched in Adelaide today and shares its accomplished MQB platform with the Golf 7 hatchback, will reflect the ‘non-performance’ hatch model range.
Standard features and available options broadly follow the award-winning hatch’s lead, although a manual transmission is unavailable — even in the entry-level 90TSI.
Priced at $25,540 plus ORCs, the 90TSI Wagon comes with 15-inch ‘Lyon’ alloy wheels in place of the hatch’s steel rims, though the tyres (195/65 R15) are the same size.
There’s also a 5.8-inch touch-screen, multi-collision brake system, extended electric differential lock, seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and fuel-saving idle-stop system for the 90kW/200Nm 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.
Other standard features include cloth interior trim, a multi-function wheel, USB/Bluetooth streaming capability and heated exterior mirrors.
According to Volkswagen figures, the 90TSI DSG sips 5.3L/100km combined – a 0.1L/100km improvement over the hatch.
Stepping up to the 90TSI Comfortline ($29,290 plus ORCs) brings specifically-trimmed ‘comfort’ front bucket seats, a reversing camera, front and rear parking distance sensors, 16-inch ‘Toronto’ alloys, dual-zone climate-control, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming interior mirror, illuminated vanity mirrors and an additional boot-mounted 12-volt socket. A ‘high quality’ instrument cluster is also included.
Both the 103TSI ($33,840) and 110TDI ($36,340) are available exclusively in Highline specification with Alcantara/fabric trim for the ‘comfort sports’ seats, specific interior ambient lighting, 17-inch ‘Dijon’ alloys, front foglights (including cornering lighting) and, most importantly, satellite-navigation, which is optional on the Comfortline but unavailable in the 90TSI.
Other options are scarce, but include a panoramic glass sunroof, bi-xenon headlights and leather trim for the Highline only, along with an anti-theft alarm for Comfortline and Highline. Both can be specified with a Driver Assistance Package ($1300) that includes adaptive cruise control, front assist with city emergency brake, proactive occupant protection system, park assist automated parallel parking and driving profile selection.
The 103TSI shares the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol power unit with the 90TSI, albeit in a different state of tune. It produces 103kW/250Nm while consuming less (5.2L/100km).
Finally, the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit in the 110TDI delivers 110kW/320Nm and returns 4.7L/100km, though its torque output restricts the 110TDI to a stronger six-speed DSG auto.
The new Golf wagon is available in eight colours, including the basic ‘Pure White’, six metallic options and one pearl-effect finish.
