Volkswagen Polo retains top safety rating

The updated and more expensive 2022 Volkswagen Polo hatchback that rolls into showrooms next month has been awarded top marks by independent vehicle safety authority ANCAP.

Following a fresh round of crash testing and assessment, the renewed Volkswagen Polo light car gains a 2022 date stamp for its maximum five-star safety rating, which was originally handed down in 2018 when the current-generation Polo was introduced in Australia.

The importance of ANCAP’s 2022 date stamp for the five-star rating should not be underestimated, given today’s testing protocols are far more rigorous.

“This is a significant achievement,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.

“Volkswagen’s addition of more advanced autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assistance systems, and a centre airbag, means the Polo now comes with the passive and active safety features and technologies required to earn a five-star safety rating against the most stringent requirements to date.”

The Polo is still Volkswagen’s most affordable car, but the 2022 update has brought hefty price rises of more than $5000 for existing models and a rationalisation of the range now sees it open at $25,250 plus on-road costs.

In the latest round of testing, the Polo scored 94 per cent for adult occupant protection, 80 per cent for child occupant protection, 70 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 70 per cent for safety assist.
