Volkswagen reveals faster Golf R

Volkswagen has released pictures and full spec for an updated version of its all-wheel drive flagship Golf R.

Powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as before, for the 2017 updates the Golf R has power and torque boosted to 228kW/400Nm (+7kW/+20Nm).

The extra power sees the Golf R sprint to 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds - 0.3s quicker than the old car.

Like before, the Golf R comes with the option of either a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch DSG auto (the latter now with an extra ratio, taking the total to seven speeds).

Along with the extra power and performance on tap, the revised Golf R comes with LED headlamps and a redesigned bumper.

Inside, the Golf R comes with a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit dash and a large 9.2-inch infotainment system that incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and MirrorLink.

The facelifted Golf R also comes with new features like Traffic Jam Assist, semi-autonomous cruise control, an upgraded autonomous emergency braking system and the firm's latest self-parking tech.

Already on sale in Germany, the facelifted Golf R should arrive in the second quarter of 2017.

As well as the faster Golf R, Volkswagen has also announced it will soon offer a new entry-level turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol.

It's not known if the 63kW Golf, that can average 4.9L/100km is destined to be sold Down Under.
