Volkswagen reveals Golf GTI TCR racer

VW Golf-based race car gets powerful 243kW 2.0-litre turbo, competition-spec sequential ’box, huge aero

Volkswagen has announced it is continuing the 40th celebration of the Golf GTI by unveiling a race car based on the current Mark 7 model.

Called the Golf GTI TCR, the FIA approved racer has been developed by Volkswagen Motorsport to compete in up to 16 national and international touring car championships governed by the ‘TCR’ rules.

Measuring in an incredible 400mm wider than the production Golf, the racer comes equipped with a completely new aero package that features a huge fixed carbon-fibre rear wing and aggressive front splitter to maximise downforce.

Inside, there’s the usual stripped out interior, safety cage and race seat that all meet current FIA safety rules.

Under the bonnet the Golf GTI’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine carries over but with power boosted to 243kW/410Nm. Instead of a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic there’s the same sequential gearbox used in the SEAT Leon Cup racer.

Beneath the skin, instead of a space-frame chassis, the Golf racer sits on the same MQB platform as the road car.

Just 20 Golf GTI TCR race cars will be made for the 2016 season, with all cars reportedly spoken for.

The TCR International Series begins on April 1 in Bahrain, where the racers will do battle before the headline Formula 1 act held over the same weekend.
