Volkswagen Motorsport has revealed, what it’s calling, an “appetiser” of the Polo R WRC that will battle it out in next year’s World Rally Championship.
Claimed to be “considerably more dynamic, while at the same time being safer” the new car is said to take advantage of a 3.0mm wider air restrictor that boosts power from the current Polo R’s 234kW to a more powerful 280kW.
Helping deploy the extra power more effectively is a new electronic differential that becomes legal for the 2017 season.
As well as more power, for 2017, the Polo R WRC will weigh in at just 1175kg - 25kg lighter than last year’s 1200kg minimum weight.
The laws governing aero have also changed and the new 2017 Polo will come with a much larger rear wing and broader front spoiler.
Statistically, Volkswagen Motorsports says the Polo R WRC is the most successful rally car ever, racking up 37 wins in 42 rallies. This gives it an incredible win ratio of around 89 per cent.
