Volkswagen teases sixth-gen Transporter

Volkswagen will reveal a near-production ready replacement for the Transporter next month

Volkswagen will finally reveal the replacement for its 11-year-old Transporter on April 15 in Amsterdam.

Called the Transporter T6, the new concept is said to pick up where the 2014 Tristar concept left off by borrowing its design cues. The only difference, is the final concept for the Transporter is said to have a production-ready interior.

Expected to be based on the flexible MQB platform that underpins everything from the Golf to the Passat, the new sixth-generation van might come equipped with the Tristar powertrain.

The 2014 concept came with all-wheel drive, and a 2.0-litre diesel that developed 150kW and 450Nm and was driven through a seven-speed DSG (dual-clutch transmission.)

Volkswagen might also offer an all-electric version, given the the German car-maker showed all-electric concept called the Bulli van back in 2011.

Built in Hanover, Germany, the new Transporter marks the 65th anniversary of the Volkswagen van.

Sales begin in Europe before the end of the year -- including in Australia, where it should arrive in showrooms in the final quarter of 2015.
