Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace to be replaced by Tayron

China-specific large SUV is going global in its next generation and will sit between the all-new Tiguan and facelifted Touareg as of 2025

The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace’s days are numbered, according to a UK report that claims the seven-seat medium/large SUV will be replaced mid-decade by the second-generation VW Tayron.

Both the Allspace and standard Tiguan are approaching the end of their respective lifespans, so much so the latter’s next-generation replacement is expected to be revealed in full tonight (June 15/16), going by a recent YouTube teaser (see below) and the myriad spy images we’ve seen showcasing undisguised prototypes of the new VW Tiguan over the past few months.

And according to Autocar, the new Tiguan will score a bigger new sibling in 2025, in the form of the second-generation Tayron.

The British publication recently sat down with one of VW’s chief engineers, Karl-Heinz Hell, who said the Tayron would evolve from a China-only model into a global offering in its next generation, and that it would retain a similar size advantage over the equivalent Tiguan, in effect replacing the Allspace.

Volkswagen customers will still have the same familiar line-up of medium and large SUVs to choose from, including the mid-size Tiguan five-seater, the medium-large Tayron seven-seater instead of the Allspace, and the large five-seat Touareg flagship – the third generation of which is about to be facelifted.

Development of the new Tayron is well underway according to Hell, with the new model set to ride on the same MQB platform as the upcoming Tiguan and next-gen VW Passat.

Power and torque will be provided in Europe at least by a range of Euro7 emissions-compliant 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines – boosted by mild-hybrid tech – as well as a pair of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) said to be good for up to 200kW and an EV driving range of more than 100km.

Autocar suggests the current Tayron’s wagon and liftback body styles will be retained but may not be sold in every market, with North America and China said to be the prime candidates for the sleeker ‘coupe’ version.

Odds are Australia will at least receive the wagon version, but it’s anyone’s guess as to which powertrains will be offered here. We’ll know more once the new model breaks cover in the next 12 to 18 months.

Meantime, watch out for our coverage of the fourth-generation Tiguan’s world debut in the coming hours, ahead of its Australian launch next year.
