Volkswagen Touareg R pricing announced

Plug-in hybrid 340kW flagship to top facelifted Touareg line-up in March 2024

The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R will finally arrive in Australia next March as the German brand’s most powerful production vehicle to date and its first local plug-in hybrid model, priced from $129,990 plus on-road costs.

Serving as the new halo for the facelifted 2024 Volkswagen Touareg range, the PHEV shares its powertrain and platform with the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and combines a 250kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbo-petrol V6 with a 100kW/400Nm electric motor to offer claimed total outputs of 340kW/700Nm.

The Volkswagen Touareg R delivers claimed 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.1 seconds and has an EV-only driving range of 51km (WLTP) and ADR combined fuel consumption of 3.3L/100km.

The flagship model will come standard in Australia with Night Vision, IQ.LIGHT Matrix LED headlights, head-up display, Volkswagen’s Innovision cockpit (consisting of the 15-inch Discover Premium and 12-inch Digital Cockpit Pro), Wireless App-Connect, wireless smartphone charging, Dynaudio premium sound system and five USB-C ports.

Further key features differentiating Volkswagen’s newest R model include 22-inch gloss-black Estoril alloy wheels, 19-inch front and 18-inch rear ventilated disc brakes with blue R-logo callipers, air suspension, gloss-black roof rails and window surrounds, black exterior mirror shells, a blacked-out front grille and rear apron, black sports exhaust, ‘R’ logo projection from the front mirrors, direct tyre pressure monitoring, power-latching doors, an Easy Open & Close electric tailgate and panoramic sunroof with electric blind.

The Volkswagen Touareg R was originally ruled out for Australia when it was first unveiled as part of the third-generation Touareg line-up in 2020 due to poor Australian fuel quality, according to Volkswagen, before being rewritten into the local script in June 2021.

In September 2021, Volkswagen Australia said the Touareg R was locked and loaded for release in 2022, when it would serve as the belated successor for the discontinued 2020 Touareg V8 TDI and the long-gone turbo-diesel V10-powered 2008 Touareg R50.

However, Volkswagen then hit the brakes on Touareg R to align the model with the release of the facelifted 2024 Touareg range, which will bring refreshed front and rear exterior designs with new light signatures (including an illuminated Volkswagen logo), Wireless App-Connect, dynamic speed sign display and area view as standard, plus the availability of IQ-LIGHT high-definition headlights.

The 2024 Touareg model range refresh and new R flagship are just the start of a busy year for Volkswagen Australia. Also arriving by mid-2024 are the long-awaited ID.4 and ID.5 mid-size battery-electric SUVs in Pro and GTX guises, followed in September/October by the facelifted T-Cross small SUV with rejigged exterior styling, a dedicated R-Line model, new driver-assist and other tech improvements.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is also planning multiple new model launches in the fourth quarter of next year, including the new T7 Multivan and California, facelifted Crafter and the all-new, all-electric ID. Buzz people-mover and ID. Buzz Cargo commercial van.
