Volkswagen Touareg will return as an EV

Large SUV set to make a comeback in 2029 and introduce VW Group's new EV architecture

The News

Just months after the announcement that the 2025 Volkswagen Touareg would be axed next year, fresh reports suggest it will return for a fourth generation in 2029, as an advanced all-electric SUV based on the VW Group's next-generation SSP platform, that will unlock its pioneering EV tech.

The Key Details

  • Big Touareg SUV to return as pioneering EV
  • Flagship SUV to be first EV based on its state-of-the-art SSP platform
  • Set to blend huge range and ultra-fast charging
  • Should be on sale by 2029

The Finer Details

For the first time in its history, the all-new 2029 Volkswagen Touareg SUV will not be developed alongside the next-gen 2026 Porsche Cayenne EV, with the latter set to be based on the current-gen PPE architecture that means it will share more in common with the current Macan Electric.

According to Germany's Automobilwoche, the next-gen Volkswagen ID. Touareg will be the very first VW to be based on the car giant's all-new pioneering Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture.

Originally, both the ID. Golf and ID. Roc were supposed to be in pole position for the new architecture but now both the small hatch and SUV are reportedly pushed back to 2030.

Fresh tech introduced by the ID. Touareg will introduce VW's latest powertrain technology, plus zonal electrical architecture and software tech developed by Rivian.

The same tech will be shared with the Scout SUV that is set to be off-limits for Europe and potentially Australia.

Other benefits of the SSP are that the new platform will herald ultra-fast charging that will slash top-ups between 10 to 80 per cent to around 12 minutes.

The same architecture should allow Volkswagen to eventually roll out its most advanced Level 3 or 4 driverless tech.

Developed to handle up to 1268kW of power from four e-motors, it's thought the production ID. Touareg could come with as much as 600kW.

The Road Ahead

It makes sense that if the Volkswagen ID. Golf or ID. Roc are delayed that the German car giant rolls out all its best, most advanced tech with the flagship ID. Touareg. What hasn't been confirmed is if the large luxury SUV will also come with the same range-extender hybrid tech recently unwrapped at the Munich motor show. If it does, combined with big power and an EV range of more than 300km, it could see the 2029 Volkswagen Touareg prove more popular Down Under than the last-gen SUV.
