Volkswagen revealed a stretched version of its Tiguan SUV at the Detroit motor show.
Based on the same MQB platform as the regular version of VW’s new-generation SUV, the Tiguan Allspace grows in length by 215mm and sits on a wheelbase that's 110mm longer than the standard car.
This longer Tiguan is said to liberate more legroom in the rear seats, increase the boot size by 115 litres and, crucially, give buyers the option of a third row of seating.
Now claimed to be among the most spacious in its class, third row seats folded flat the Tiguan Allspace offers a total of 730 litres of carrying capacity and 1770 litres if you fold down the second row too.
Under the bonnet, the long-wheelbase Tiguan misses out on the entry-level petrol and diesel options and is available with a 1.4-litre TSI turbo petrol or a larger 2.0-litre turbo-diesel - both generate 108kW and come with the option of the firm's seven-speed dual-clutch auto.
Some markets also get the option of a 137kW 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol.
The Allspace comes with both front-drive and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive.
The long-wheelbase Tiguan has already been confirmed for Australia, as well as other right hand drive markets such as the UK.
In the UK market the Tiguan Allspace commands a premium over the standard wheel-base SUV of around $5000. Pricing has not been confirmed for the cars we get.
Timing is also yet to be announced although it's thought the US will get its cars in the third quarter of 2017 hinting we might get our cars towards the end of the year.
