Volkswagen wins green engine award
Volkswagen was given a big green tick at the international engine of the year awardsThe annual 'International Engine of the Year Awards' were recently held in Stuttgart, Germany, comprising 12 categories including a 'Green Engine of the Year' award.
For 2009 Volkswagen was awarded the Green Engine of the Year award for its 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol TSI 'Twincharger' unit, which makes use of both a turbocharger and supercharger.
Volkswagen's compact four-stroke combustion engine had stiff competition in the form of hybrid engines from Toyota (Prius) and Honda (Insight) for the green award, but still managed to win.
The VW-developed engine even took out two other categories: the '1-litre to 1.4-litre' award and the highly coveted 'International Engine of the Year' award.
At present the engine is available in Australia in the VW Golf, generating 118kW of power and a healthy 240Nm of torque, yet uses a miserly 6.2L/100km with the six-speed manual transmission and 6.5L/100km with the seven-speed DSG auto. Taking advantage of exhaust gas recirculation, catalytic converters and lambda probes, CO2 emissions are 150g/km and 144g/km for the manual and auto gearboxes respectively.
Dean Slavnich, who is the editor of Engine Technology International and co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards, had this to say about Volkswagen's 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger engine: "The international judging panel is hugely impressed by this VW engine. It's a masterstroke of downsizing technology and a real engineering showcase.
"I have no doubt that this engine will become the template for a whole new generation of high efficiency, small capacity engines in the years to come," added Slavnich.
