What happens when one of the most severe-looking classic Swedish sedans gets a modern-day makeover?
This beast.
The Volvo 240 is what most people think of – and want to talk about – when the Volvo name pops up in conversation... primarily due to its unashamed, ultra-boxy exterior design.
Sketch Monkey – aka Marouane Bembli, a former car designer – took it upon itself to rework the classic 1970s Volvo 240 shape with modern-day details and the result is this butch-looking Swedish motorväg slayer.
It's the kind of car you'd expect Jason Statham to drive in the unloved action movie franchise
.Taking design cues from modern Volvos, particularly the 'Thor’s hammer' LED daytime running lights, but enmeshing them within the classic Volvo 240’s austere front-end design, the car has a striking look.
The grille hasn’t been altered too much, nor has the vehicle’s overall ‘three-box’ shape, but Bembli explains that some of the finer details, including the tail-light design, were inspired by modern Volvo sedans like the S60.
It also rides on big alloy wheels borrowed from the Volvo S90.
If something like this eye-popping Volvo 240 actaully existed, it would surely be powered by the now-defunct Yamaha-engineered V8 from the first-gen Volvo XC90.
That 4.4-litre bent-eight pumped out 230kW and 440Nm and gave the chunky XC90 a low-7.0sec 0-100km/h sprint time.
Of course, there’s newer tech in the Volvo garage, such as a 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged plug-in hybrid powerplant that cranks out almost 300kW and 640Nm.
While we’re dreaming, why not just go for the full EV powertrain from the Polestar 2?
As Volvo’s high-performance, high-tech sub-brand, Polestar's latest drivetrain employs a big lithium-ion battery (78kWh) that drives twin electric motors punching out 300kW and 660Nm.
Then again, maybe Volvo's original ‘red block’ carburetted four-cylinder engine from the 1970s with its cast-iron block and rippling 74kW of power would be the most authentic option?
