Volvo is claiming a downforce improvement of 30 per cent for its S60 and V60 Polestar models, which will be limited to a production run of just 1500 units for the 2018 model year.
A new front splitter, side sills and rear spoiler extension – the new carbon-fibre components credited with the extra downforce – have been developed by Polestar and Cyan Racing, employing data derived from contention in the World Touring Car Championship. Polestar Cyan Racing also conducted secret testing around the Nurburgring's Nordschleife circuit, where the S60 posted a record-breaking time for a road-registered sedan.
For the 2018 model year, the S60 and V60 Polestar models also gain high-gloss black diamond-cut wheels, carbon-fibre mirror caps and a new colour option: Bursting Blue Metallic. Carry-over colours are: Cyan Racing Blue, Onyx Black Metallic, Bright Silver Metallic and Ice White Solid.
Inside, the cars feature new seat upholstery with contrasting blue stitching and Polestar embroidery.
Technical tweaks comprise the adoption of adjustable Öhlins dampers and six-piston Brembo brake calipers and 371mm diameter front disc rotors.
“The Model Year 18 S60 and V60 Polestar models are the pinnacle of our road car programmes that we have been developing successfully since our first road car was launched in 2013,” says Jörgen Ronstad, VP of Product Strategy & Management at Polestar.
“The aerodynamic enhancements, combined with other small but important changes, further enhances our base philosophy of a performance car for all roads and conditions, transferring technology and learnings from track to road.”
The S60 and V60 Polestar models continue to be powered by a two-litre turbo-and-supercharged four-cylinder engine producing 270kW and 470Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds (4.8 for the V60). An eight-speed automatic transmission delivers torque to all four wheels, which measure 20 inches in diameter and are shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport 245/35 ZR20 tyres.
Local prices for the four-cylinder Polestar variants were announced back in April.
