Volvo EX30 to follow Tesla with no driver’s display

Volvo has provided a tantalising look inside the 2023 Volvo EX30 ahead of the all-new battery-electric small SUV’s full unveiling on June 7, highlighting its minimalist Scandinavian-influenced interior design that does away with a traditional driver’s instrument cluster.

Instead, Volvo is following Tesla in asking the driver to rely solely on a central infotainment screen (12.3-inch, in this case) for all key information including vehicle speed and state of battery charge.

The Chinese-owned Swedish brand says this is a key element of the EX30’s ‘centralisation’ cabin theme and creates a feeling of space around the driver while saving materials and ensuring maximum focus on the road.

“On the single screen, key driving information such as speed and charge levels are positioned prominently at the top, with navigation, media and controls easily visible and accessible below,” said Volvo’s head of user experience Tom Stovicek.

“We also include a contextual bar that gives you the most relevant functions for your needs at any time.”

Similar to Saab’s old ‘night panel’ button, the centre screen features a ‘calm’ view which removes all but the most vital information for extra focus and reduced eye strain at night.

Like all modern Volvo cars, the infotainment system has Google built-in, meaning sat-nav duties are taken care of by Google Maps while Google Assistant manages voice commands.

Smartphone mirroring will also be available as standard for those using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, the latter offering wireless functionality – a first for Volvo.

Another brand first is the full-width sound bar integrated into the dashboard, which means traditional door speakers aren’t required. Volvo says this saves on materials as well as production complexity.

Other interior design highlights on the EX30 include a central glove box (under the infotainment screen), central window switches, adaptable centre console with a secure sliding storage bin underneath and larger open-top cavity for things like handbags.

Customers will be able to choose from four unique cabin themes, or ‘rooms’ as Volvo calls them, depending on the sustainable materials and trims selected, including recycled denim, flax (linseed plant), wool and Nordico (recycled PET).

According to Volvo interior design boss Lisa Reeves, the “EX30 combines all the best elements of Scandinavian design”.

“New materials add creative textures, colour and personality to the cabin, while smart functionality and a great user experience are the hallmark of every true Volvo creation,” she said.

The EX30 will be revealed in Sweden on June 7 and is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms late this year.
