Volvo has given us the tiniest preview of the eco-friendly interior of its upcoming 2023 Volvo EX90 and detailed some of the sustainably sourced materials within it.
The preview is provided by a pair of close-up images showcasing the deeply sculpted seat backrests, the optional wool blend upholstery they can be wrapped in and one of the FSC-certified wood panels said to be scattered throughout the interior, which will be clad in a new leather-look material dubbed ‘Nordico’.
Volvo will move away from the use of traditional leather in favour of materials like Nordico, starting with zero-emissions vehicles like the EX90 and the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, which arrives in Australia next month.
The Scandinavian brand says its innovative new upholstery is sourced from recycled PET bottles and other “bio-attributed material from responsibly-managed forests in Sweden and Finland”.
Every EX90 will contain almost 50kg of recycled plastic and bio-attributed materials, says Volvo of its all-new flagship electric SUV.
While there’s little doubt different colour schemes will be optionally available, the two images reveal a light grey and off-black interior colourway that looks elegant and classy without being flashy, thanks in part to the chrome trim bits.
“For us, bling isn’t best,” said Volvo, adding that it will shift away from old automotive industry traditions like the smell of real wood and animal leather and is committed to the use of eco-friendly and sustainably sourced materials.
“We’ve chosen materials based on our values,” said senior design manager Cecilia Stark.
“These choices leave behind old-fashioned automotive luxury and express our Scandinavian foundations.
“With the Volvo EX90 we take customer well-being as a design starting point.”
Due to be revealed on November 9 and arrive Down Under in 2024, the Volvo EX90 will be the battery-electric alternative to the established Volvo XC90 large seven-seat SUV, which has been confirmed to be hanging around a while longer courtesy of a fresh facelift.
Volvo is yet to formally tease the exterior styling of the EX90, but the party was unofficially spoilt back in August when design trademark renders surfaced online.
These then served as the basis for more detailed renders whipped up by graphic designers around the world, the best of which revealed a strong cosmetic link to the just-revealed and mechanically related Polestar 3.
Single- and dual-motor powertrains will be offer globally, the latter of which could develop up to 360kW/840Nm.
