Volvo EX90 features radical new dash design
Volvo’s flagship electric SUV to introduce high-tech driver displays that adjust to every situationA clean and simple dash arrangement is a familiar ingredient in the cabin design of Volvo cars, but the 2023 Volvo EX90 takes this to a whole new level.
The latest teaser images released ahead of its debut on November 9 showcase the new battery-electric flagship SUV’s dash design, which dispenses with most traditional switchgear and relies almost exclusively on two screens.
These are a large portrait-mounted touch-screen that handles all the major controls, while a broad panoramic screen behind the steering wheel serves as a (configurable) digital display for driving information.
The steering wheel is clutter-free with illuminated haptic controls within the two horizontal spokes, plus a couple of traditional stalks on either side for the transmission selector and windscreen wipers/indicators.
Like other Volvo models, the EX90’s infotainment system will be Android-based and come with in-built Google Maps and Hey Google voice recognition.
Central to the new layout is the car’s ability to constantly monitor its immediate environment and the activities of the driver and display the relevant information via the screens.
This means that certain controls and functions will be brought forward to the home screen as required by the situation, whether the car is parked or driving or if the driver is taking a phone call, for example.
Otherwise, anything deemed superfluous is removed from the driver’s view.
“It’s all about providing you with the right information at the right time,” said Volvo Cars UX boss Thomas Stovicek said.
“We want your driving experience to be focused, simple and safe.
“Since the car also understands its surroundings and you better than ever before, we can create an even safer situation by reducing mode confusion, distraction and information overload.”
Volvo also says the EX90 will be hardware-ready for unsupervised autonomous driving, so “in the future the car can ultimately be able to drive for you”.
