"It was all rather un-dramatic," said Gordon, a retired science teacher from New York. "We just cruised along and I kept an eye on the odometer in order not to miss the great moment".
"But it has really not been about just getting to the three million miles; it’s more about the trips that got me to the three million miles and what I have experienced getting there.
"I never had a goal to get to one million, to two million... I just enjoyed driving and experiencing life through my Volvo."
The odometer clocked up the magic mile at 4pm local time, September 18 – on the Seward Highway near the township of Hope, Alaska. It was Gordon's (and the Volvo's) first visit to the frozen American state. Three million miles earlier – on a holiday weekend in 1966 – Gordon picked up his new Volvo and immediately notched up over 1500 miles that weekend.
It took over 20 years for the Volvo to log its first million miles, but just 15 years for the second million. And 11 years have passed since then.
The Volvo was transported to Alaska by truck and Gordon flew in to be reunited with the car for some touring around the state. Hailed as a new world record by the Guinness Book of World Records, the feat represents the longest distance travelled by one driver in the same car.
