Volvo is recalling approximately 360,000 cars in North America.
A defect in the electronic throttle module in Volvo C70 and V70, S60, S70 and V70X models built between 1999 and 2002 can cause engines to lose power without warning and shift into 'limp home' mode.
Australian-delivered models are not affected.
Volvo Australia spokesperson Todd Hallenbeck told CarPoint that the recall did not include local cars because emission settings (and therefore componentry) were different in the US to suit regulations.
Volvo had "noticed unexpected fault warnings on the engine management systems" and voluntarily began a service program in North America months ago, said Hallenbeck. US Volvo owners who bring their cars to dealerships will have new software reinstalled for the throttle-control unit.
