Volvo reveals updated S60

Volvo has released the first images of its updated S60 mid-size sedan, due to land here in the second half of the year

The key changes are to the oft-criticised suspension, which is now said to deliver a sportier driving experience. The existing S60 has earned less than favourable reviews for dishing up a non-compliant ride and somewhat clumsy handling at the limit.

Consequently, the updated car gains a new 'Dynamic' chassis, which is said to sharpen handling without adversely affecting ride quality.

Firmer shock absorbers front and rear with 24 per cent stiffer springs are said to increase the car's torsional rigidity and grip by about 25 per cent, while the front and rear anti-roll bars are up to eight per cent stiffer to reduce body roll.

Volvo also boasts of improved steering feel, thanks to bushes that are now solid to reduce torque steer and "create a better combination of confident road manners and supple ride".

We'll see whether it lives up to these claims when we drive the car later this year.

The Volvo active Four-C chassis (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) from the high-po S60 R will still be available for 2007 models. This system enables the driver to select Comfort or Sport modes by pressing a button.

The European engine line-up will comprise a range of petrol and diesel powerplants, as well as a Bi-Fuel CNG (compressed natural gas) motor. Locally, we can expect the 162kW 2.5T, 191kW T5 and 220kW S60 R.

Visual changes to the refreshed S60 are subtle, but trainspotters will notice the new front spoiler, larger front grille, Active Bi-xenon headlights, door mirrors with in-built indicators and new alloy wheels.

Interior tweaks include aluminium inserts on switches, vents and stalks, 'one-touch' indicators, new 'grid' aluminium inlays, optional two-tone 'Imola' sports leather upholstery, and new 'sports design' for the steering wheel, handbrake grip, dials and gearshift knob.

The revised S60 has a big job ahead of it, as it faces stern opposition from the segment-dominating Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series. Audi's A6 is also gradually making inroads in the category. The Volvo will need to be a bloody good thing.
