Volvo Canada and footwear brand Casca are launching a limited-edition sustainable sneaker inspired by the pure electric Volvo XC40 Recharge. The shoes were created by Canadian footwear brand Casca who are known for their uses of sustainable materials and their ethical production choices.
The footwear matches the Volvo for Scandi design cues such as minimalism and neutral tones and adds the extra kick of eco-friendliness with the use of recycled materials.
“We’re excited to team up with Casca footwear who share similar values and combine our passions for sustainability, technology, and understated modern design,” said Matt Girgis, managing director of Volvo Car Canada Ltd. “At Volvo Cars, we are committed to setting the highest standards of sustainability in mobility and that goes beyond electrifying our fleet to transforming all aspects of our business."
Both Volvo and Casca say that the goal was to create a shoe 'rooted in conscious design'. Scandinavian influences of the XC40 Recharge were purposefully integrated into Casca’s trademark clean lines design of their Avro shoe series.
“The Volvo XC40 Recharge was designed to reduce environmental impact, so it was the perfect inspiration for the shoe,” said Kevin Reid Lead Director and Co-Founder, Casca. “Through this collaboration, we’re also celebrating many design firsts – our first shared design, our fastest production to market, and new recycled materials we’ve never used before.”
Each sole is made from 10% recycled car tyres, the first time this material has ever been used in a Casca shoe as part of an intentional repurposing and recycling of materials. While seven recycled plastic bottles are used to make the yarn for each breathable, flexible knit upper.
The shoe design itself draws on inspiration from the Swedish car brand which sees the Swedish flag represented on one shoe tag, while the iconic Thor hammer headlight design weaves its way into the linework and panelling.
The shoe will be available to Canadians to buy for $198 CAD ($214 AUD) on September 22nd 2021; which is World Car Free Day. These sustainable yet fashionable shoes are very on-brand for Volvo who by 2025, is aiming to increase the amount of recycled and bio-based materials in their vehicles by 25%.
