Volvo teams up with Starbucks to create electric vehicle charging network in the US

Need to charge your EV but have nothing to do for at least half an hour? This latest collab between Volvo and Starbucks might just be the caffeine hit you need.

Volvo USA will install as many as 60 Volvo-branded ChargePoint DC fast chargers at around 15 Starbucks locations along a 2172km route from Denver, Colorado to the coffee company’s Seattle headquarters. The plan outlines a charging location about every 100 miles (160km), well within the average battery range of most electric vehicles but just enough distance for coffee lovers to get their next fix.

ChargePoint’s DC fast chargers, for example, can charge the new Volvo C40 Recharge from 20 per cent to 90 per cent charge in about 40 minutes. While EV owners recharge their cars outside, drivers and their passengers can relax comfortably inside with their favourite Starbucks beverage and recharge their own batteries.

As part of the tie-up, EV drivers will be able to use these stations for a fee, while Volvo EV drivers will have access to these stations at no charge or at preferential rates. Installation of the charging stations is expected to be complete by the end of 2022.

Just as Volvo plans to be a fully electric car company by 2030, Starbucks has green aspirations too with its goal of leading the retail industry in decarbonisation solutions, including electric vehicle charging and onsite solar at stores and in adjacent locations. Could this be a solution to Australia’s EV infrastructure challenge and our love and need for coffee? Only time will tell.
