Volvo the heavy hitter in MY09 World Green COTY awards
Nearly a quarter of the nominees for 2009 awards are VolvosVolvo's aspirations in the green car market have received a boost this month with five of the Swedish company's models nominated for 2009 World Green Car of the Year awards.
Five Volvo models -- the C30, S40 and V50 DRIVe models, and the 2.5 litre Flexifuel-powered V70 and S80 -- appear among a total 22 award nominees.
Volvo claims the C30 hatch with the 1.6 litre DRIVe clean diesel powerplant sips just 4.4L/100km; the extra weight of the S40 sedan and the V50 wagon take this up to 4.5L/100km. It also claims best-in-class CO2 emissions -- 115g/km in the C30.
The 2.5-litre five-cylinder Flexifuel engine gives the larger V70 and S80 147kW and 300Nm using E85 fuel.
The World Green COTY winner will be announced on April 9 at the New York International Auto Show.
None of the nominated models are yet on sale in Australia. The company is still evaluating both DRIVe and Flexifuel models for viability in the local market.
