Volvo XC60 gets facelifted and Google infotainment

Mild external tweaks and increased tech on the way for popular Volvo SUV

The 2021 Volvo XC60 has been revealed overseas with fresh styling, new interior technology and upgraded driver assistance features.

Due to launch in Australia in July, the overhaul to the Swedish alternative to an Audi Q5 or BMW X3 is headlined by an all-new infotainment system that runs Android Automotive.

Operated through a 9.0-inch portrait-mounted touch-screen, the new system allows drivers full access to Google apps and services, including Maps and Google Assistant.

The latter has been linked with reduced driver distraction as its AI-powered voice control is capable of operating many of the functions on board.

Further apps can also be installed via the Google Play Store directly from the touch-screen.

As well as the new Android system, the 2021 Volvo XC60 also gains upgraded hardware to improve its driver assist systems, including new radars, ultrasonic sensors and cameras.

The new sensors are said to boost pedestrian, cyclist and even animal detection, with the system capable of auto-braking and steering away from a potential hazard in an emergency.

The XC60's Pilot Assist semi-autonomous cruise control is also said to have been enhanced, with the system now capable of functioning from standstill to highway speeds.

Externally, few will spot the changes, but look closely and there's a new grille, lower front bumper, plus new paint and wheel options.

Inside, leather-free upholsteries are now available.

As carsales exclusively reported earlier this week, the facelifted MY22 Volvo XC60 will kick-start the car-maker's bold move to offer only electrified vehicles in Australia.

It will arrive with the choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.

In Europe, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol powertrain options include mild-hybrids producing 145kW/300Nm, 184kW/350Nm and 220kW/420Nm.

The PHEVs include the 251kW/590Nm Recharge T6, 288kW/640Nm Recharge T8 and 298kW/670Nm Recharge T8 Polestar Engineered.
