Volkswagen has confirmed the Amarok Canyon weekend-warrior concept it debuted at the Geneva motor show in March will enter production and its Australian subsidiary says it is keen to introduce the model locally.
At this stage it’s not clear when the Amarok Canyon, the final production version of which debuted at the Sao Paulo motor show yesterday, would become available Down Under, but local Volkswagen spokesman Karl Gehling all but confirmed it will do so at some stage.
“Amarok Canyon is a model we are interested in and are considering for Australia,” Mr Gehling told motoring.com.au.
VW Commercial Vehicles chief Eckhard Scholz, who unveiled the showroom-ready model in Brazil, said positive public reaction to the Geneva concept had persuaded VW to approve production. Mr Scholz said the modified version of VW’s four-door dual-cab ute was designed to combine “a working machine with a sporty lifestyle vehicle”.
The Amarok Canyon was revealed in Brazil alongside VW’s all-new up!-based Taigun compact SUV and a new three-door version of the South American nation’s top-selling Gol city-car, which has attracted more than seven million Brazilian buyers in the past 25 years.
Pictured here at VW’s first Group Media Night in Brazil, prior to the Sao Paulo show, the Amarok Canyon stands alongside the Audi S8, Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4, Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse and Bentley Continental GT V8.
Presented in Geneva as a concept configured “specifically for competitors in the extreme sport of freestyle kayaking”, the Amarok Canyon is wider and taller than the standard Amarok dual-cab. It is not clear exactly how many of the concept’s features will carry through to production, but the show car brandished a 40mm suspension lift kit that, combined with over-sized tyres, gave it an 85mm ride height increase.
The Canyon concept also wore two electrically deployed side steps to aid entry-egress to the higher cabin, contrasting-colour underbody protection, extra lights mounted on the roof, smoked tail-lights and a special paintjob with three-layer effect.
Volkswagen has had a presence in Brazil since 1953. Last year about 24,000 VW workers produced more than 828,000 vehicles in South America’s largest nation and the world’s sixth-largest economy.
