Volkswagen is seemingly planning to re-write the laws of physics next month when it enters an Amarok ute at the World Time Attack Challenge.
Incredibly, the German manufacturer's Australian distributor wants to better the 1.59min time set by its GTI hot hatch around the Sydney Motorsport Park, with the help of three high-performing apprentices selected as part of the inaugural 'Modern Apprentice Program'.
The apprentices have a 165kW/550Nm Amarok V6 Highline as their donor vehicle for the one-off project.
Volkswagen Australia insists the exercise doesn't reflect any desire to enter the Amarok into the inaugural SuperUtes season next year.
"We have no interest in SuperUtes whatsoever," Volkswagen Australia spokesman Paul Pottinger clarified.
Instead, the distributor hopes to highlight the skills of apprentices and technicians within its Australian dealer network.
"The decision to build our own super ute was an easy one," said project lead Kurt McGuinness.
"Volkswagen has a long history of building apprentice concept cars for the annual GTI conference at Lake Worthersee, Austria, and the cars have always been met with much excitement and fanfare.
"But, this is Australia – the biggest export market in the world for the Amarok – why not up the ante and have our apprentices build something that will excite and inspire Australian fans?"
Volkswagen is developing the ute with support from Bilstein suspension, Michelin, V-Sport, AP Racing and Shane's Signs.
Expect to see the Amarok concept debut at the World Time Attack Challenge at Eastern Creek on Friday, October 13.
