Boy-racers with an environmental conscience rejoice; your new car is headed this way. Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the diesel-powered Golf GTD will arrive in local showrooms by "mid-year" to offer drivers the option of performance style crossed with frugal consumption.
As we wrote last year the GTD is powered by a 125kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that sips as little as 5.3L/100km. The new GTD in effect replaces the defunct Golf GT TDI, which sported the same performance but with a more conservative look.
Volkswagen Australia is keeping the exact timing and price of the GTD a secret until closer to its launch but expect the new model to slot underneath the petrol-powered GTI. Pricing is expected to start around $35,000 with the choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
"We would like to add it to the line-up as soon as possible," Karl Gehling, General Manager Press and PR, told the Carsales Network.
The GTD shares the same front-end styling treatment as the GTI, including grille and bumper, but sports different wheels and rear bumper.
Under the skin, the GTD is tuned to fill the gap between the comfort-orientated 103TDI and performance-focused GTI.
"It doesn't quite have the same performance as the GTI but it offers performance and economy in a unique package," Gehling added.
