Volkswagen has announced technical improvements to its MEB platform-based vehicles that will boost their range to 700km and almost double the charging speeds of current models such as the VW ID.4 electric SUV that could arrive in Australia as soon as next year.
According to the car-maker, its next-generation batteries will boost the quickest charging speed from 125kW to over 200kW.
With improved charging times and a better range, engineers will ramp up the performance of its EVs – particularly all-wheel drive models that will soon be capable of a sub-5.5sec 0-100km/h sprint, compared with the 6.2sec 0-100km/h time of the quickest Volkswagen ID.5 GTX.
As part of a presentation at the Paris Electric Car Day, Volkswagen sales boss Silke Bagschik detailed the improvements but did not explicitly announce when, or for which, models the new batteries would be introduced.
It's thought the longest-range 700km battery pack will debut on the Tesla Model S-rivalling Passat-sized Aero B that will go on sale in 2023.
