VW Golf Cabrio makes a comeback

Latest generation VW Golf gets the chop-top treatment and brings sharp pricing to the segment

Volkswagen Australia launched the long-awaited new Golf Cabriolet this week. The soft-top Golf’s price starts under $40,000 -- spot-on to attract shoppers otherwise looking at convertibles from the likes of Renault, Peugeot and Audi.

The new Golf Cabrio is offered with VW’s hearty 1.4-litre twincharged four-cylinder petrol engine and either six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG, for $36,990 and $39,490 respectively. The options list is short -- featuring leather upholstery ($3300), high-end sat-nav system ($3000) and rear-view camera ($1400) -- otherwise the Golf Cabrio is a well-equipped and tidy package.

Standard-fit equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, daytime-running headlights, dual-zone climate control, park assist and Bluetooth with audio streaming. Chrome exterior highlights (standard) accentuate the Golf Cabrio’s profile and it looks great from behind with roof up or down -- not something we can say about every convertible.

The roof opens in nine seconds, tucking neatly into the top of the boot and leaving a generous 250 litres cargo space, and the rear seats can be lowered for more room. The roof closes in 11 seconds and is operable at speeds up to 30km/h.

Volkswagen Australia has had a very busy year. The new Golf Cabrio is the tenth and last release for 2011, which started with the Amarok and included new Passat, Touareg and Jetta, but the Golf Cabrio is a “highlight for us,” said VW Australia’s managing director Anke Koeckler.

The brand achieved eighth position in market share here in 2011 “and we don’t want to give it back,” she said. “This year we didn’t just launch new cars but we found new customers, and I hope they are happy with their Volkswagens.”

VW Australia is currently expanding its dealer network and expects to have 90 outlets by the end of the year. The new Golf Cabrio is available for order from dealers now.
